With Antonis Antoniou on the six-stringed tzouras, Demetris Yiasemides on a range of wind instruments and Andys Skordis on guitar and electronics, the trio is equally at home at WOMEX or the Sziget Festival and ESNS.
Their fourth album, Pissourin, on the German label Glitterbeat Records, was their big breakthrough that pushed them in a more psychedelic direction. Pissourin, Cypriot dialect for total darkness, is a portrait of the night and a search for the meaning of life, for feeling like a child again: innocent, authentic and honest.
With just three instruments and the help of a looping station and electronic wizardry, Monsieur Doumani creates a tsunami of surreal sounds.
Quite simply “impressive”, as the headline in the Financial Times read.
