The Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) brings together more than 150 regional authorities from the 24 member states of the European Union (EU) and from countries beyond the EU.

Representing around 200 million people, the CPMR advocates for a more balanced territorial development across Europe. Operating as both a think tank and a lobby group, it represents the regions in matters related to economic, social and territorial cohesion, as well as maritime affairs.

As a political forum, the CPMR ensures that the common interests of the peripheral maritime regions are represented at European level. It cooperates with national governments and European institutions to ensure that the interests of its member regions, as well as the positions they adopt, are taken into account when European legislation and related EU policies are being prepared.

At the same time, it promotes the development of cooperation programmes among its members by supporting their establishment and coordination, and by investing directly in selected projects.

The CPMR’s objective is to safeguard the interests of its member regions, in particular with regard to policies that have a significant regional and territorial impact, with a primary focus on economic, social and territorial cohesion. The CPMR aims to promote a strong regional policy that benefits all regions across Europe. A key objective is the implementation of an integrated maritime policy to contribute to Europe’s economic growth.

As a member of the CPMR, the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Cyprus participates in the CPMR Islands Commission, as well as in the CPMR Intermediterranean Commission.

The Political Bureau is the CPMR’s main decision-making body. It convenes twice a year to propose policy guidelines to the General Assembly and implement its decisions.
