The ESPON Seminar is held every six months and highlights the thematic priorities of the Presidency of the Council of the EU with regard to territorial cohesion.

It features presentations, workshops and discussions between experts, academics, and state officials. 

During the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2026, the seminar will focus on competitiveness through the lens of cognitive distance. 

It will explore the factors contributing to reducing the cognitive distance between Europe’s less competitive regions and its leading innovation and competitiveness hubs.
