EU leaders and social partners met in Brussels for the Tripartite Social Summit. The main theme of the summit was ‘Investment for a vibrant European economy and quality jobs’.

The participants discussed the following issues:

  • closing the investment gaps
  • reducing strategic dependencies

During the discussion, EU leaders and social partners discussed existing barriers to competitiveness in Europe and explored ways to address these challenges. In particular, many participants raised the issue of rising energy prices, caused in part by the EU’s dependence on fossil fuel imports in an increasingly volatile geopolitical context. They called for the development of clean, renewable energy sources in Europe to increase the EU’s energy sovereignty, boost strategic autonomy and ensure cheaper energy in the long term, in line with the aims of the energy transition.

"By investing in areas such as education, skills and affordable housing, we can successfully tackle the EU’s strategic dependencies, create high-quality jobs, ensure prosperity and protect our citizens in an increasingly challenging geopolitical environment."
António Costa
President of the European Council
