A cultural tapestry

Cyprus seamlessly "weaves" its rich heritage with its evolving modern identity. Its unique geographical location has rendered it a meeting point for civilisations for more than 11,000 years, forming a cultural tapestry that blends influences from around the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and beyond.

Cyprus is a living museum of Mediterranean history, home to remarkable sites and monuments spanning several millennia. The island boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Neolithic Settlement of Choirokoitia, the archaeological site of Nea Pafos with its renowned mosaics, and the Painted Byzantine Churches in the Troodos region.  Cyprus also hosts important religious monuments, such as the Agios Lazaros Church, believed to have been built over the tomb of Agios Lazaros, and the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque, the third holiest place for Muslims worldwide.

Fortifications and architectural landmarks further reflect the island’s diverse past: from the Venetian Walls of Lefkosia, the imposing medieval castles of Voufavento, Kantara, and Agios Ilarionas along the occupied Pentadaktylos mountain range, and the Gothic monastery of Belapais to Cyprus’ own “Notre Dame”, the Saint Nicholas Cathedral in occupied Ammochostos (Famagusta), and the elegant arches of the Kamares Aqueduct in Larnaka.

Cypriot folk art adds yet another thread to this cultural tapestry, with traditions like the Lefkara embroidery, where Venetian influences meet local artistry, and the art of “pipilla” needle lace of Byzantine origin, preserved by the lace-makers of Kilani, Lapithos, and Omodos villages. Alongside these are traditional basket weaving, silverwork, and other forms of folk art.
