The Informal Network of EU Law Enforcement Authorities and Expertise in the Field of Cultural Goods (EU CULTNET) was created, following the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus, with a Proposal submitted by the Cyprus Delegation, at the meeting of the Law Enforcement Authorities Working Party (LEWP) of the Council of the EU, in June 2012.
The draft Resolution (14242/12) was discussed during the Presidency of the Council of the EU, by the Republic of Cyprus, in the second half of 2012 and was adopted by the Council of the EU on 25 October 2012.
Among other things, the Network's Contact Points act to prevent and combat crime in the field of cultural goods, to strengthen cooperation at national and international level between law enforcement authorities and cultural authorities, as well as private actors.
The first meeting of the EU CULTNET Network took place in May 2013, in Cyprus. This was followed, to date, by seven (07) more meetings of the Network. Cyprus remains one of the main/active members of the Network and makes every effort to strengthen it.
The purpose of the meeting will be the discussion between the EU Member States, as well as other European and International Organizations, (EUROPOL/INTERPOL/FRONTEX etc) on issues related to the Combating the Illicit Possession and Trafficking of Cultural Goods.
