Europe's future will be judged by its ability to act in unity, turning unity into action for the benefit of its citizens and future generations, said today the President of the Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, in his address at the Plenary Session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

During the presentation of the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), President Christodoulides underlined that the EU is the greatest political project, founded on equality among member states, solidarity and the strength of unity in diversity.

Despite its imperfections, he said, the EU’s unique ability to evolve and grow stronger in times of crisis makes it resilient and ever relevant. In an unstable geopolitical environment, Europe must respond with deeper integration, collective action and a determination to defend its values. He added that the need for a European Union that is both more autonomous and more outward-looking is emerging as the next stage in the European integration process.

Stronger together

Earlier today, the President of the Republic of Cyprus held a bilateral meeting with the President of the European Parliament, Ms Roberta Metsola.

During a joint press conference, President Christodoulides underlined that, as the democratic heart of the Union, the European Parliament is essential to the success of the Cyprus Presidency. He also reaffirmed Cyprus’ commitment to a close, structured and meaningful partnership, in order to deliver a stronger, more secure and more competitive Union. The President stressed that this partnership will be based on transparency, mutual respect and ongoing dialogue.

“Together with the European Parliament, Cyprus is determined to transform our shared priorities into concrete results – strengthening Europe from within together, and reinforcing its role as a force for stability, peace and prosperity.”

President Metsola expressed confidence that Europe is in good hands under Cyprus’ leadership, given the major challenges Europe is currently facing in terms of security, geopolitics and competitiveness. With regard to security and defence, Ms Metsola stated that the EU will continue to increase readiness and spending, remain steadfast in its support for Ukraine, and adapt to new geopolitical realities. She also reaffirmed the European Parliament’s strong commitment to Cyprus and to finding a solution based on a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation, in line with UN resolutions and EU law.

“We need more integration across borders, less fragmentation across markets. And in this we know we can find a trusted partner in Cyprus.”

When asked about Greenland, President Christodoulides said that Cyprus understands the situation better than any other EU member state. He reaffirmed Cyprus’ firm commitment to international law and the principles of the UN Charter, as well as its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, including Denmark. He emphasised that EU member states remain united in their respect for international law, as well as in their support for and solidarity with Denmark and Greenland. At the same time, Mr Christodoulides stressed the importance of transatlantic relations and the EU–US partnership, noting that escalation or attempts of imposition would not serve anyone’s interests.

President Metsola argued that strategic autonomy, the central theme of the Cyprus Presidency, is a key priority for the EU. She noted that, particularly with regard to security and energy, the EU must be self-sufficient. She added that while the EU must remain calm and focused on solutions, it must also adapt. She also emphasised that European unity is essential in order to send a strong message of partnership and constructive dialogue.

President Christodoulides: “Culture is our common language”

During his visit to the European Parliament, the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the President of the European Parliament jointly opened the “Myths and Tales of Cyprus” exhibition, organised by the Press and Information Office (PIO) of the Republic of Cyprus. The opening took place in the presence of the PIO Director, Ms Aliki Stylianou. The exhibition breathes new life into ancient myths, which are living narratives that connect generations, reflect the values of our peoples, and form an essential part of our cultural identity. It thus reveals the deep cultural foundations that underpin Europe’s collective identity.
