From cities to Europe: Lefkosia at the heart of the dialogue on the future of the Union

Article

The 238th meeting of the Bureau of the European Committee of the Regions was hosted today in Lefkosia within the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU). The meeting reaffirmed the Cyprus Presidency’s strong commitment to bringing Europe closer to its citizens, through strong local governance and the meaningful involvement of regions in shaping European policies.

Speaking on behalf of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, the Minister of Interior, Mr Constantinos Ioannou, highlighted the crucial role of the Committee of the Regions as a bridge between the European institutions and the everyday lives of citizens. He emphasised that cities and regions are at the forefront of today’s challenges. During this period of multiple crises and geopolitical changes, Europe needs strong local governance and policies shaped by the reality on the ground, more than ever.

Referring to the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency, Minister Ioannou reiterated the vision of a strategically autonomous Union that is more resilient and competitive, open to the world, yet cohesive within it. The agenda focused on social and territorial cohesion, as well as sustainable development.

Specific reference was made to the issue of housing, particularly access to affordable and decent housing, as a challenge that concerns all EU member states, and as an issue of social justice and quality of life. Both the state and local authorities have a decisive role to play.

“Municipalities and regions are at the front line of EU challenges. Strategic autonomy is built with cohesive, fair and resilient societies, cities and regions.”
Constantinos Ioannou
Minister of Interior of the Republic of Cyprus

Finally, the Minister of Interior reaffirmed the Cyprus Presidency's commitment to continuing its close cooperation with the European Committee of the Regions. The aim is to build a Europe that is strong externally and truly close to its citizens.

During the meeting of the Bureau of the Committee of the Regions, discussions focused on how digital innovation, research and blue technologies can enhance the preparedness and resilience of Europe’s cities, regions and coastal communities.

Participants also exchanged views on the key role local and regional authorities play in promoting these solutions, implementing them on the ground, and protecting their communities in times of increasing environmental and social challenges.
