Meeting of the Special Envoys for the Sahel in Brussels

The Meeting of the Special Envoys for the Sahel, co-hosted by the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) and the Office of the EU Special Representative for the Sahel region, Mr João Cravinho, took place on 16–17 March, in Brussels.

The meeting brought together the Special Envoys for the Sahel of EU member states, like-minded countries, as well as regional and international partners.

High-level participants included the Special Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mr Leonardo Santos Simão, the African Union Special Representative and Head of the African Union Mission for Mali and the Sahel (MISAHEL), Dr Mamadou Tangara, and the Special Envoy of Ghana to the Alliance of Sahelian States, Colonel Larry Gbevlo-Lartey.

Over two days, participants exchanged views on the situation in the Sahel and examined ways for enhanced engagement in the region, including by working together more effectively to support local, sub-regional and regional initiatives.
